The night was dark, but the bright lights of the city cut through the air. That was the thing about Paris, any city really, it was never truly dark. It was as if somewhere along the way the whole population turned into children in need of a night light to keep away the bogeyman hiding beneath their beds or in the closets. Chaos is what it would be if they were ever without their precious lights. It would be as if the civilized world they had worked so hard to create had disappeared in a blink of an eye.
Roul, arm clutched around a vapid and uninteresting woman - his façade for the night - thought the prospect perfectly thrilling.
"Aren't the lights just beautiful?" her voice was grating, as light and airy as her brain. Although the charm was still on his face, his head felt read to implode if he had to suffer another minute with her - the prospects of spending the night with her didn't even seem lightening. As soon as this was over she was disappearing into the night, forgotten along with every other face he'd ever seen.
The only difference was except for a disguise he had gotten nothing from this one.
Giving her a large smile, eyes light, he held up the small replica of the tower in front of them, "I think mine is much more beautiful than there's don't you?"
Although he was hardly being very funny at all, the girls irksome life filled the space, attracting the attention of all the other people milling around the Parisian landmark. Instead of dwelling on their stares the man looked up at the Eiffel Tower, the focus of tourism and the city.
His prize.
"You know," Roul leaned over to his 'date' far too besotted with the tin structure, "I don't think this is all it's cracked up to be. What do you say we get out of here?"
She blinked her wide green eyes up at him; funny, the colour of them seemed to be annoying him, not to mention the pitiful expression behind them, "Oh but Eity I thought we were going to go up?" The whiny tone she had adopted and the obnoxious shortening of a name that wasn't even his - not that she was aware of this - was almost unbearable. He was thankful he wouldn't have to put up with that for long.
Forcing himself to tighten his hold on her instead of pushing her away like he wanted, he adopted his best comforting tone.
"Well, I suppose we can take a quick ride up, and then I know some other things we could do. But for that to work, we'd need to -"
At that moment several things happened. A young man, rushing his way across the tight space, obnoxiously inserting himself in between many a couple, shoved his way between the two breaking Roul's grasp and shoving him away from his date, and towards the object of everyone's attention. As he heard her horrible voice grate his name, watch her pouty gaze turn towards him, something far more unusual happened. The lights on the tower, the street lights, all flickered once, twice and then went out completely.
Darkness, real darkness filled the city. Silence followed the darkness, for the moments it first descended the world stood perfectly still. Each and every person in Paris froze, completely lost for what to do. Each and every, that is, except one. After the silence came the sea of noise, the chaos Roul predicted. The screech of tires as cars attempted to squeal to a stop in the crushing darkness, screams and yells of confusion. Her own whinny voice calling the name that was not his somehow managed to increase about the rest.
It lasted for less than five minutes. Half a second before that park the lights flashed on again, showing the pale confused and frightened face of the masses. Roul, nothing amiss, the miniature tower he had been sporting before still tightly in his hand, looked exactly as the rest. He pushed passed some person to get to his so called date he looked as concerned as anyone else.
"Well," he gave her a shaky grin, "That was fun wasn't it. Do you still want to go up, or do you think we should just call it a night and take you home?"
Sitting at his desk in the infirmary Roul smirked dropping the paper on top of all the other copies advertising the exact same thing. Sitting just to the left of the desk, as there had been for months prior, sat a tiny 'replica' of the so vanished city icon. His eyes drifted towards it, and he couldn't help but give a satisfied smirk. It was a good day.

Tower Vanishes; Authorities Baffled
Two weeks after the city had its fluke power outage, authorities are amazed to receive countless reports that at some point between two and three this morning Paris's most iconic land mark, the Eiffel Tower, has simple, disappeared ...
