His outer, easy going manor, is hiding a precise, and thoughtful individual. His outer shell, which he puts up to protect himself from attachments, is that of any typical slouch of a man, always willing for a night of drinking with a girl (or a guy) on the side.
That being said, Bennett is actually a very conciousness, insightful and organized being. Although he never uses it, he is gifted with higher intelligence and a magnificent memory. Even when he looks like he's drunk out of his mind, or doesn't have a care in the world, Bennett is always analysing the room. He has to be.

Plot:
Bennett's father was once part of the Mafia, a high up, right hand man, a position that he had worked hard for. But the thing about Victor Martin was that he was a power hungry man. Being right on top wasn't good enough for him. He wanted to /be/ the leader. When his attempt to take over the underground organization failed, he went into hiding, leaving his wife and young children behind. The only act of compassion and consideration he had ever given his family.
Changing his last name to Cooper, and moving about the world, Victor met Cynthia Martin, a very attractive Barmaid half his age. Seeing beauty as its own kind of power, Victor used his charm, and old fashioned manors to completely bewitch the young squib. When their midnight trusses resulted in Bennett, the only thing that kept Victor from fleeing, abandoning the girl as a lost cause was the sudden possibility of power. He saw an opportunity in the unborn child.
Forcing experimental potion and spell after experimental potion and spell on his young fiancée Victor was determined to make his unborn child the most powerful being known to mankind. At first Cynthia believed the man's stories that these were all for the better health of their child, but slowly suspicion began to set in. And when Victor threw a fit upon Bennett being born seemingly perfectly normal - no astounding feats - the truth was revealed. Cynthia packed up her new born child, and moved as far away as possible, leaving little to no trail of where she went.
The only thing, however, that really kept Victor away was that as he grew up, Bennett showed no visible signs of great power. No, Bennett appeared to be a perfectly normal boy.
Only he wasn't. He appeared to pick up things much faster than all the other children. Astounded teachers were encouraging him to be put into special classes - the boy immediately began to hide his intelligence. When he was sent to Hogwarts, he made an effort to appear just as normal as any other student, though at times he'd make little slip ups. Reciting whole texts books when Professors asked for answers, getting the one too many spells on the first try. Slowly, he began to stand out - and his father, who had returned to his original family, playing the fascade of guilt ridden member once more while actually trying to regroup get new cohorts, noticed.
On the eve of his graduation, his father approached Cooper, telling him the truth, urging, begging, and then threatening that he join his forces. Bennett refused.
The next morning he found the boy he had built a relationship with through out his last years of school dead. The next day, Bennett disappeared from the map.
Bouncing from place to place, he never stayed anywhere too long, avoiding attention. After about two years, when it seemed that his father had forgotten about him, Bennett decided that he'd start working against him in the only way he could. He joined the Ministry, he spent two years as an Obliviator before an aquaintence with the minister moved him surprisingly and suddenly up to a deputy. A job he was unsure how he got, yet scrapped along doing for about a year, before the young man felt eyes on him again, disappear with little preamble.
After about a year and half of hopping about again, news filtering through on the underground of the going ons, growing tension between Ministry and Mafia drove him back into the real world
