"Excellent question, Miss Jones," Mad told the girl. "The obvious purpose is, in fact, the most widely used application for this spell, however, it is sometimes used by healers to check the dilation of a patient's eyes."

Lighting her own wand, she narrowed the beam until it was not much wider than the tip of her wand. "It can also be used to light other light sources," she said, then uttered, "Lumos." The end of her wand lit again and she pointed it towards the unlit lantern atop her desk. After a second, the light jumped from her wand to the lantern. She tapped it with her wand a couple times, the light growing brighter each time.

"This lamp, of course, has been spelled to function in this manner.

"Lumos is the basis of a few other illumination spells, but as those are more complicated charms, you will be learning them later."

Mad silently regarded the girl a moment, her expression unchanged, though, internally she was quite pleased. "Five points for a well-thought query, Miss Jones," she told her.

"Those of you who feel you have properly mastered the charm may begin work on outlining your essays that will be due at the end of the week," the professor continued. "You are to write three feet on Hover Charms. You may also read quietly from your texts."

J. J. suppressed a pleased smile. Not only had her question not been silly, but it had earned her house points. She liked the warm feeling that gave her. Nodding along to what Professor Lewis said, she quickly jotted down the other uses of Lumos for future reference.
Once that was done, she pulled out her text book.
Hover Charms
She had titled the paper, but in all honesty didn't know anything about the charms. There was only one way to find out. She opened her Texted book and started looking at the table of contents, trying to find a good place to start.
Before setting her wand down she looked at it a moment.
"Lumos."
J. J. smiled at the glow. After a moment she shook her head, "Nox."
Magic was fun, but now it was time to get down to work.

Damian put his wand aside, satisfied with his success with the charm. Pulling out a piece of parchment and a quill, he opened his textbook and began to read the chapter on hover charms.

Emily put her wand back in her bag and started reading the chapter about hover charms.
She took her quill and wrote ''Hover charms'' on top of her parchment.

"That will be all for today," Mad declared when the end of class arrived. "I trust any of you who have further inquiries will come to me as necessary. You may now pack up your belongings and leave.

"Dismissed."

The woman turned to her desk, getting out her notes - the ones she didn't need or use - for her next class.

"Oh," she added without taking her gaze from her task. "Miss Jones, you will meet me in my office this evening. Seven o'clock, sharp. Do not be late." She gave no further explanation as she waited for the students to vacate her classroom.

Damian didn't need to be told twice. He promptly began to put his supplies away. The boy didn't think the professor liked him, too well... He shouldn't have answered before she called on him. At least she hadn't taken points - this time.

He shot a sympathetic look to his housemate when the professor told her to meet in her office that evening. She hadn't done anything that seemed to make the teacher irritated, though, so perhaps it was a good thing? Damian glanced at Professor Lewis and shook his head. No, any reason Cranky Lewis wanted to see a student couldn't be good, he decided.

Slinging his bag over his shoulder, he made a hasty retreat.

J. J. looked up startled.
"Yes Professor."
Then she turned and slipped out of the class room, nervously wondering what on earth the Professor could want with her.
