Overall history: Lainey was born to a religious family, who taught her that magic was evil and that those who practiced it stood against God. This, of course, was the cause of some confusion when it was discovered that her brother Eli had been born with magic. Her parents did everything they could to help their son turn the 'darkness' within him aside and live free of the curse with which he'd been born. Wizards found out about Eli and decided to 'save' him, taking his sister (then age nine) soon after.

It was at the time Eli was taken that it was discovered that Lainey had an unusual ability: she could take a wizard's magic. Furthermore, not only could Lainey deprive a wizard of his magic, she could then use it intuitively, without wand or incantation. This 'leeching', as the wizards who had taken her termed it, lasted between ten and twelve minutes. Baffled, the wizards tried to figure out how she'd been born with this ability when she possessed no magical signature of her own.

Lainey did not appreciate the process.

When she finally managed to escape nearly two years later, Lainey returned to her home, but all that remained was a scorched foundation where the house once stood. Leaving the place, she started to go by just Lainey, legally changing her name to Lainey Ladrón once she was old enough, thinking that her captors would likely look for her again.

For years, Lainey harbored hatred against wizards and vowed to use her talent - "be it a blessing from God or a curse from the devil" - to further 'the Lord's work', which she believed to be the downfall of Wizard kind. She was part of, and even temporarily led, a branch of the Order Exodus 22 for a while, before all such orders fell apart.

Only then did she find her brother.

At first, they had difficulty getting along, much having happened to each of them in the twelve years it had been since they'd seen one another. Still seeking acceptance from the brother she had been hoping to find again, Lainey delivered a box letters she had written to Eli in lieu of keeping a diary. Before she could change her mind and retrieve them, Eli had read a great many of them, coming to understand his sister at least a bit.

Several months later, they returned to Cardiff in an effort to try to find out what had happened to their parents. It was then that they learned that not only were Daniel and Eve Patterson truly dead, but they themselves had set their house on fire, committing suicide approximately a year after Eli and Lainey had been taken.

A couple months after that, Lainey found out she was pregnant, which she initially faced with panic and terror. Lainey has no idea who the father is - she was drunk to remember. All she knows is that she would do anything for her infant daughter.
