Personality: Katerina was a fun, smart girl when she was young, but soon learned to mature fast. When her father came back home, she became scared and closed off from the world. She usually took care of her little sister by herself after her father went to jail, as her mother was too lost in drugs, and from all the time she spent after school in the bookstore, she became very knowledgeable.

When her sister died, her world collapsed and she turned into the very closed, mistrusting girl she is now. Katerina doesn't have any friends and doesn't love or trust anyone except her grandmother. She's very determined, stubborn and proud, and also has a decent amount of confidence in herself, as she knows exactly what she's capable of. She's brave, but cunning, and refuses to appear weak.

Overall history: The Kahnovich family is a normal, Muggle family from Russia. Andrey Kahnovich met Ivana Friske at a party and they hooked up, which led to Ivana getting pregnant with Katerina. Andrey left Ivana and ran off, but came back a few years later and got her pregnant again with another girl - Yulianna - and they got married.

Katerina had to mature at a very young age. She'd resented her father for running off, and when he came back she hated him even more. Turns out all those years he was gone, he was in jail for being a drug dealer. He came back and continued with the dealing, and often hit her mother, who was a drug addict, and Katerina when no one else was home.

When Katerina was 8, he got sent to jail again. Her mother became more and more distant everyday, and Katerina had to take care of her little sister by herself. Her mother hated her two daughters, for she thought they ruined her life and any chance she had at becoming successful. Katerina went to the local public school, and after-school she often helped out at the local bookstore for extra money.

One day, a few weeks before the girl turned 11, her mother had one of those attacks she often had when she was on drugs, but it was worse. Katerina wasn't sure what happened, but one moment she was walking to her house with her little sister, and the next, her mother had hit Yulianna and thrown her into the street, and she was hit by a car. Died instantly. Katerina, angry and sad, decided she had had enough and called the police. While they didn't officially charge her mother for killing the young girl, she was charged with other things, amongst them drug possession, and got sent to jail.

Katerina went to live with her grandmother in Poland, when she got her Durmstrang letter a few months later. Durmstrang was very different, but she could've easily adapted had the accident not happened. But she was still angry and full of grief, so Katerina focused herself on her studies and didn't dare get close to anyone. Books were often her companions, and she found herself focused more on those worlds than on the real one.
