She was nine today. It had been nine whole years since Kallie Nikkala was brought into the world by a formally doting parents; it had been two and a half years since she had become an only child, and the only sane person within her house. The doting mother had spent a year of that in her bedroom, periodically calling for her eldest daughter who would never answer again, and leaning upon the youngest one as a gimp would a crutch. As for her father, he had chosen to deal with the lose that had crippled their household by drinking it out of his memory; if there had been a time between that first night, when the childish Kallie had sure he had 'not woken up' like her sister, and the present day that he was not drunk, than it was only because he was not conscious. Neither parent had been able to stand the loss of one child to remember that they still had another one.

The truth was that they didn't have a child anymore, not really. They had forced Kallie into become a little adult, while they had carried on the luxury of behaving like children. She was the parent, and they the child.

This was the third birthday she had weathered under such conditions, and Kallie had no illusions of how it would go; she had no faith in either parent even remembering the day meant anything more than just another day without Elena. She had no desire to behave as if it was anything else than that; what was the point of wishing for things that would not occur? It only caused more heartache when her parents failed to live up to those expectations.

Through the door of her room, the young girl could hear the thumping that indicated her father had awoken; however Kallie made no move to approach him; he was little more than a beast when he woke up with a hangover, and he was disgusting when he was drunk. Generally, Kallie had learned it was best to just stay out of his way. Locked up in her room, the young girl continued to pour over the books she had procured for herself out of her mother's old things. Some of them were out of date, to be sure, but the basic concepts of most magic never changed. The young girl was determined to learn as much as she could as soon as she could. The fast she learned, the fast she could find a way to help her parents; magic surely must have had a way to make them better? Magic would fix everything wouldn't it?

Her stomach grumbled, and the girl frowned at the door; she could go eat, but she did not wish to get in her father's way, besides she already knew from earlier that morning, the night before, and even that afternoon that there was nothing left in the house to eat. The loud sound of her father's swears stated that the realization had occurred to him as well. She ignored it for as long as she could, before it became very evident that he was going to come drag her out of her room of she did not answer soon.

It was just as well, she had to leave soon anyways; Mrs. Carpelan would surely come drag her out of this house if she did not show up. The kindly older woman had made it her job to make sure that Kallie behaved like a child at least one day of the year if no other time - although she made many attempts daily.

Pushing herself away from the small desk she had been sitting, she took great care to put the chair back just right, before she staked the books back on top of each other - by size, the largest had to be on the bottom - before she turned towards the bed with a frown. It was pristine as always - Kallie couldn't stand it any other way - but the tiny voice in her head demanded that she had to straighten it one last time before she left. Ignoring the headache that had been growing for the last three hours or so, Kallie smoothed out the comforter, before she carefully picked up each and every pillow fluffing it twice, before setting them where she had found them. Nodding her head she mumbled a quick "perfect" before turning and heading out into the main part of the small cottage where her father still stood staring into the refrigerator like food was magically going to appear.

"Kallie," his tone held the annoyance of someone laying blame, "Where did the food go? I'm hungry."

Sighing the young girl glared at the older man, "Then perhaps, Papa, you should have thought of that before you put all your money on last night's bar tab."

The sound of the fridge slamming brought her mother out of the bedroom where she had been 'resting', "Elena?"

Kallie winced; the pain at being confused for her sister - on her own birthday no less - caused her to miss the way her vision seemed to swim again. Her stomach rumbled but she ignored it. Mrs. Carpelan would be sure to feed her - if she could ever make it there.

She had no patience's to correct her mother as she usually would; her father was too hungover to even notice, or care if he did. "I'm going out." She turned her blunt gaze to the older man, "If you want food, I suggest you leave money for some next time; or get it yourself."

Straightening, Kallie donned her shoes, and left the house without looking back. As she walked down the street towards her neighbor's house, her vision swum again, and this time she noticed. Freezing in place, Kallie blinked, face pale and hands shaking. What had that been?

Although she had never passed out before, the young girl was smart enough to think she'd know the signs. Only she didn't want to know, and she didn't understand where they would be coming from. In all nine years of her life she had never been anything but healthy. Maybe she just needed food; this was the longest that she had gone without eating.

That was what she rationalized it as, and continued walking to her caring neighbour who did what her own parents should have. Actually recognized her birthday.

The woman opened the door with a wide smile and a bright birthday wish, ushering the young girl in. Who after being directed into the room, began straightening her skirt, counting the strokes as she did so. She needed to get to ten.

However she never got to ten, nor did she see Mrs. Carpelan's son Ky's shy greeting. For before she got to five, the world swirled again, and this time it went back.

That was the first time Kallie Nikkala had passed out from her, then undiagnosed, hypoglycemia.
